I'll post some some of the comment of the viewer for all (1, early message board days, total drag.) of you.
OVERALL GRADE: * * 1/2 stars out of * * * * Okay, now to the movie itself. I can honestly say, I really wanted to like it. Jim Carrey and Violet did really good jobs with acting, but Klaus made me cringe with the way he delivered his lines, and the funny thing is I don't remember him wearing glasses all that much. And sunny, she seemed to much like any old baby you know, was really annoying, every time something bad happened they cut to a shot of her, likely to make us feel sorry for her, but when she was annoying us, that was a hard thing to do. That was one of the things i wrote down on my card.
The scene where the baudelaire children go to the fire after their parents house burns down, though, is perfect. So, the movie follows the book pretty closely, changing the dialogue into stuff that's pretty funny, showing more of what Olaf did to the orphans so that they didn't seem like brats, and then the whole play thing happens, and they made the scene seem to climactic, like, you thought the movie was over, but it's not, this happens again after the reptile room. Meryl Streep is exactly what I thought Aunt Josephine would be. Klaus looked too tough guy, though, he hated count olaf the second he saw him, which really bothered me.
The reptile room parts are sweet. I loved all of the animals and stuff that was there, they looked super cool, and whoever played Uncle Monty was fantastic. The scenes at Lachrymose lake look really cool, I loved the cinematography, and Count Olaf's house...it will blow you away, it is so cool. The whole movie definetly had that snicket look to it the whole way though, I liked that about it. However, I enjoyed it, but I can't say it was a good movie, they still have some work to do on it. The movie seems to be longer than it actually is because it's three in one.
Yeah, the narraration was funny, at the very beginning Lemony (the narrarator) told us to leave and throughout the movie kept trying to trick the audience into leaving, which was why i said yes to that rather than a title card with some terry gilliam-style animation.
On a scale of 1 through 5, i'd give Jim a 4.5. Klaus made me cringe because for some reason, he didn't seem like a bookworm and was more like an imitation of daniel radcliffe. He couldn't pull off most of his lines, and the scene where he gets slapped he doesn't even really look that hurt, he's just like, Ow!
The Troupe was hilarious. My only thing is that the one who looks like neither a man nor a woman looks more like a woman, so I kept mixing him up with the two ladies in white. They were really funny, though. Especially the one with the hooks, he cracked me up when he was using them as utensils to eat.
The thing when Olaf was in the car is in the Reptile Room when Olaf is driving down Lousy Lane and his car stops and he is trying to get it started before the train hits him. It's rather amusing, just a bridging scene to show where he went. Of course, the filmmakers had like 4 places where they might place the scene, they didn't know what to do with it. I voted to not have it at all, because even though it's amusing it's kinda dumb.
Last chance general store? That won't be in this one, it's in the eighth book, isn't it? Desert scenes? Yeah, the desert scenes were really quick, just transitions between some of the open-ended parts in the story, like between parts they would show Olaf in the desert over lemony narrarating, etc. I remember a shot of Olaf riding on a scooter thingy, through what looked like a desert, but they showed us that scene at the end, to leave the story open ended. This was just a rough cut, though, you've got to remember, they said the finished film would likely be different from what we saw, which i hope means it's a better version than the one I saw.
Sunny biting things was shown, but in parts kept to a minimum, probably cause of child labor laws they didn't want her to choke on it or anything. Sunny wasn't a bad actress, she was good, i just didn't necessarily like the way her character was presented in the movie.
Running time, i'd say the movie is about 2 hours long. It had that Harry Potter vibe going on, be faithful, yada yada yada. Personally, since ASOUE is a mystery, I would take each "clue" or important plot element from each book, combine them together and make a trilogy that was still faithful, but the book six is when the trilogy gets good, so why waste time on the Miserable mill when you could have the baudelaires read the newspaper articles on what happened and that couplet on a train to Dark Avenue or something like that? That's just me, though. The film was in sequence, they told us that they had other ideas for how it would be sequenced but for our sake everything was in chronological order, except for variations. The hurricane works a lot better as the climax, the marriage is just stupid as the ending, it makes the movie too fast and too confusing, so I voted for that.
Oh yeah, sorry i forgot, beatrice is mentioned, though not by name, and he says something about her towards the end too, but Sunny started wailing and I couldn't here. With Sunny's language, it was subtitles for some gags towards the beginning, but every other time, Violet acted as a sort of intrepreter. (A question about where it took place) my hometown, New yawk city! the siblings are convincing, you can indeed tell that they are siblings. I don't remember a last chance general store, honest. No, jude law is never actually on screen, simply a voice over. The scene on the railroad tracks never actually has anything to do with the plot, there's not much to go over in detail, becase they still want you to see the movie in theatres so in the edit I saw, they cut away right as the train was about to hit him. I think the movie is too long and too slow, they're gonna have to do something about that.

I think it will be as well. And personally, I don't think Klaus is the type of person who is completely EXPRESSION EXPRESSION EXPRESSION if you get what I mean. He's not all "Like, oooh mi god, that smack, like, completely and totally hurt!" I think Liam has done very good, from what I've seen, and gets praise by every director he has had so far. I'm pretty confident that he will do justice to Klaus Baudelaire's character.

Yea, Klaus seems like the sort of person who keeps stuff to himself and doesn't let a lot show, you know? Liam did a very good job.

Yep. People think I am miserable sometimes, once I was in this soccer thing and someday asked "Do you want to be here?" HELLO! JUST BECAUSE I LOOK LIKE I AM NOT INERTESTED AND UP IN SPACE does not mean, whatsoever, that I am ;D lol....
Cool! My brother just got his license a few days ago. The wait was literally 4-5 hours, just for a small 3 minute test....
I feel like a baby, I don't get mine until 3 years from now.
